My extensive experience includes the assessment and approval of air emission control measures for a diverse range of industrial and waste treatment plants, such as IVC compositing, MRFs, landfills, MBT, and AD sites. Starting his career as Sales Engineer in Belgium, he has taken up responsibilities in service, project management, and engineering support, moving at the same time from Sales Manager to Analytical Manager for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxemburg. Kenneth Vindum has participated in the creation of the world’s first DAHS standard, EN 17255 in CEN/TC264/WG 9 and is the founder and CEO of Olicem A/S whose primary product is the MCERTS certified DAHS system ReportLoq. The system has been delivered to +14 countries world-wide. He has for the past +20 years worked with development of IT systems as a Full-Stack developer and IT security expert. Emma Gibbons (BSc Hons, CEnv, MIAQM, MIEnvSc, PIEMA) is an Air Quality Specialist with over 15 years of experience in air quality monitoring, modelling, impact assessment and indoor air quality. She has managed technical and operational aspects of projects across multiple sectors – working with local authorities, government agencies, construction companies, planning and engineering consultancies. Marta O’Brien is a Chartered Environmental Scientist with an MSc in Environmental Protection and extensive experience working for UKAS accredited organizations. She has worked as an analytical chemistry scientist on various projects, providing advice, equipment, analysis, and results on environmental pollutants. Her work included reporting to environmental consultancies, providing results for assessments (for example the London Olympics site), and assisting over 100 organizations undertaking air quality monitoring across the UK.
Since 2018, Marta has worked as part of the technical team supporting teaching and research, and since 2020, she has also been undertaking part-time postgraduate studies in the field of air quality at the University of Reading.

I am a senior rtesearch associate at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge. My research employs multidisciplinary tools from the fields of building science, atmospheric chemistry and computer science to address several important research gaps on environmental health risks that have been challenging to tackle with conventional approaches. I have developed a novel methodological framework for estimating air pollution personal dose in unprecedented detail by taking advantage of novel miniaturised sensor technologies and advanced computational methods for activity modelling.
Valerio Ferracci is a Senior Scientist in the Air Quality and Aerosol Metrology Group (AQAM) at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). He leads the work of AQAM in sensor evaluation and gas pollutant monitoring. This involves using dedicated exposure chambers to validate the performance of sensors, including pumped and diffusive sampling methods for nitrogen oxides, VOCs, and ammonia, and emerging low-cost sensor system. He supports DEFRA’s local air quality management (LAQM) through QA/QC of NO2 diffusive samplers, as well as the recently established UK Urban NO2 Network (UUNN).

Dr. Rajesh Kumar K V is a distinguished academic and researcher currently serving as Chief Technological Scientist at the AI Research Centre and Associate Professor at the School of Business - Business Analytics department, Woxsen University, Hyderabad, India. Currently, he is leading an engineering team working on interdisciplinary research projects. He holds the prestigious Chair Professor of France Belanger of Information Systems and is actively involved as Co-Chairperson of the Centre of Excellence – Sports Analytics and Management. Furthermore, he is the Advertflair Chair Professor in Marketing and Advertising, specializing in AI Projects. His academic credentials include an M. Tech in Embedded Systems and a Ph.D. in Applied Artificial Intelligence in biomechanical engineering. His research specialization is Human Computer Interface-based signal Data Analytics for Bio-Medical Applications, Machine and Deep Learning, and Business Analytics. In 2022, he showcased his expertise in sports analytics at the Data Con LA+ IM Data 2022 conference in the US, California. His significant research contributions were recognized at ICRA 2023-UK in a workshop on Computer Vision for Wearable Robotics by Harvard University. He recently attended as a panel member to discuss “Digital landscape – Beyond AI” at the Digital Innovation Summit – Bucharest, Romania, and "How AI is changing the landscape of work" at the AI Tech Summit in April 2024, in Malaga, Spain. Recently he participated as a panel member to discuss “Future Cars: How Does it Looks Like” at the MOVE Conference, in June 2024 in London, UK.

At NPL, Neil has partaken in numerous measurement campaigns and accumulated over 150 days of experience in the field. In recent years, Neil has led the development of a CO2 DIAL facility and recently published a paper on the topic. Since 2018, in addition to his role within the DIAL team, Neil has been the leading the further development a long-term methane monitoring technique. Through this work Neil has become a proficient users of various atmospheric dispersion modelling packages. In 2022, NPL completed a project in partnership with BEIS to investigate methane emissions from anaerobic digestion facilities. This work combined various NPL measurement techniques including DIAL, FEDS and Tracer. As part of this project, Neil was the responsible scientist for the coordination and delivery of measurements at 7 different AD sites.

Peter is the project manager and greenhouse gas (GHG) lead in the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) team. Peter has worked on the NAEI for over a decade, including preparing UK GHG statistics, reporting GHG emissions data to the United Nations on behalf of the UK, and supporting UK civil servants on net zero policy. Peter is also a UNFCCC accredited expert reviewer for the waste sector.
Mark Bourn is a Principal Scientist within the Environment Agency’s Chief Scientist’s Group. Mark has worked for the Environment Agency and predecessor organisations for almost 30 years, working in science and regulation in waste management and other industry sectors. Over the last ten years Mark has been involved in many research projects concerning the quantification of methane emissions, in particular emissions from landfills.
Dr Nia Jones is a Senior Scientist within the Evidence and Analysis Team in Defra’s Resources and Waste Directorate. She specifically provides scientific support including evidence syntheses, project management, scoping, and design for topics within the remit of Resources and Waste including net zero and emissions from landfill and the waste management sector. She has a PhD and previous research experience in microplastic transport modelling and plastic pollution. She is interested in bridging the gap between science and policy and highlighting the need for sound evidence in light of global environmental challenges.
Dan Wicks is the UK Managing Director of GHGSat, the world leader in independent and global greenhouse gas emissions intelligence. Holding more than 15 years’ experience in Earth observation (EO) innovation and strategy, he has been at the forefront of UK EO industry growth, holding several roles in both private sector and academia. Most notably Dan led EO programmes at the UK’s Satellite Applications Catapult, uniquely established to transform the UK’s capability for innovation and to help drive future economic growth. Dan is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Marc Coleman leads much of the research at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) concerning spectrometric and analytical chemistry-based measurement methods applied to, industrial sources, agricultural sources, and remote sensing of the atmosphere's composition / radiative balance. Since joining NPL in 2002 Marc has been lead scientist on several multidisciplinary European Horizon projects coordinating National Metrology Institutes’ research in the emissions area. Marc currently is UK national expert to approximately 10 CEN/ISO working groups standardising various aspects of industrial emissions monitoring.
Senior Advisor, Environment Agency
Rupert Standring manages the Environment Agency’s Emissions monitoring and certification team. The team is responsible for the Environment Agency's monitoring and certification scheme (MCERTS). The team is also responsible for monitoring guidance and standards on stack emissions, ambient air, soil and water quality monitoring.
Rod Robinson is a Principal Scientist in the Environmental Emissions Metrology group at NPL, and leads the emissions research activities at NPL, and has over 30 years’ experience in the measurement of emissions measurements from point and diffuse sources. Rod is chair of BSI EH/2 and CEN TC 264 the standardisation committees responsible for emissions and air quality standards in the UK and Europe.
Mr Fritz Hausberg has worked in the Environmental Protection department at TÜV Rheinland Energy & Environment GmbH for more than 12 years. During this time, he has been responsible for suitability testing (QAL1) of continuous emission monitoring systems and ambient air monitoring systems. He also works as an auditor for manufacturers of certified measuring equipment to monitor manufacturing processes. He is also a member of a working group that draws up standards.
Richard Maggs is a senior technical expert in Bureau Veritas UK and is Project Director for several UK compliance networks working with the Environment Agency, Defra and the Devolved Administrations on the science and evidence for air pollution compliance. Richard has over 30 years’ experience in the field of air pollution having gained a PhD at Imperial College, London, in the late 1990’s. He has been extensively involved in the Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) regime in the UK, and has been an expert witness in public inquiries, civil litigation and judicial reviews on matters related to air quality.
After graduating in Physics from Birmingham University in 1978, Martin joined the National Coal Board research establishment to work on sensors for the measurement of various gases in challenging underground environments. He was awarded a PhD from Nottingham University in 1987 for studies of the surface chemistry and electrical behaviour of tin oxide semiconductors. He also managed a successful demonstration of distributed optical fibre temperature sensing for the remote detection of localised coal seam heating in UK mines.
In 1994 he moved to City Technology, leading research and development to deliver commercially successful optical, catalytic and electrochemical sensors for toxic and flammable gases. He directed highly qualified technical teams and various external collaborations while also taking a key role in the protection of intellectual property.
Honeywell acquired City Technology in 2006 and he was subsequently awarded a Honeywell Technology Fellowship for outstanding expertise and leadership. He has published over 50 papers and patents and is a member of the Institute of Physics, holding Chartered Physicist and Chartered Engineer status. Since retiring in 2021 he has been a Director of the UK Gas Analysis & Sensing Group.
Colin Edge is the Technical Director at ACOEM Dynoptic, where he has worked for 17years on the design, development, manufacture, commissioning, and maintenance of industrial monitoring instruments. His expertise includes air quality and lighting control instruments for road tunnels and continuous emissions particulate monitors.
Dr Mike Hemingway has worked for twenty years at the UK’s Health and Safety Executive on research into gas detectors and supported investigations by HSE inspectors on incidents involving gas detectors.
Simon Medhurst graduated in Chemistry from Warwick University in 1984. He joined the Coal Research Establishment (CRE) of the British Coal Corporation to work on the measurement of industrial emissions to atmosphere. He was actively involved in the formation of the Source Testing Association (including being Chairman). He is a member of British Standards Committee EH 2/1 (Air Quality) and represented the UK on CEN Technical Committee 264 (WG19, Emissions Monitoring Strategy). He worked in the Mcerts (stack-emissions) team of the Environment Agency for a year in 2005. Since 2003, he has operated as an independent consultant. His main activities are Mcerts examiner, Technical Assessor for ISO/IEC 17025/Mcerts and ISO/IEC 17043 (Proficiency Testing) and he also offers training services. He works for accreditation bodies in UK, Ireland and Slovenia. He conducts training in stack-emissions monitoring for a range of clients and is co-director of the annual Industrial Air Pollution Monitoring course run by Leeds University.
David Graham is a Technical Consultant with Uniper Technologies, working at their Technology Centre near Nottingham, England. He provides technical support in relation to Continuous Emissions Monitoring, emissions reporting and compliance issues for all plant types. This includes the development of guidance for green-house gas reporting. Before joining Uniper, he was a gas turbine combustion engineer with Alstom for six years and, prior to that, he worked on various aspects of combustion and environmental science with British Gas. In the past, David has chaired the UK Source Testing Association and the European Power Industry Technical Group on emissions monitoring. David is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
Ilaria Thibault received her Ph.D. degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Bologna, Italy, and from the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, Spain, in 2013. That same year she joined Vodafone Group Research and Development as Principal Researcher on 5G technologies and spent 5 years in this role running pre-commercial trials and network performance assessments as 5G transitioned from vision to standard, with particular focus on Vehicular communications and Ultra-reliable and low latency networks. In 2019 Ilaria joined the Vodafone IoT organisation as Technology Strategy Manager with focus on IoT security, mobile private networks, and cellular-based location technologies. In 2021 Ilaria joined the Vodafone Business Strategic Partners organisation and has since been managing strategic alliances with global technology companies. Ilaria is interested in understanding how Vodafone can leverage its network infrastructure to host air quality and weather sensing network, contributing to developing a ground-level rich data set that can unlock new insights on air quality and weather at scale.
Richard Harvey has over 25 years’ experience working within the UK industrial emissions monitoring sector. He has worked as a monitoring contractor for four accredited organisations and carried out monitoring across a broad range of industries, at home and abroad, to a wide variety of European and international monitoring standards. He has provided training on general aspects of emissions monitoring as well as analyser certification and on-site validation. He currently works as a Senior Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory and is responsible for quality and technical aspects of their industrial emissions monitoring activities. While at NPL, he has worked on several European research projects investigating emissions monitoring improvements. He is currently working on the validation of monitoring methods for carbon capture plant and the measurement of fugitive hydrogen emissions from the gas grid. He is also Chair Elect of the Source Testing Association.

Jelle Hofman holds a Ph.D. degree in bioscience engineering and works for 3 years now at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), Belgium, on (i) innovative environmental sensing applications for legislative (PM, NO2, O3) and emerging pollutants (BC and UFP) and (ii) methodological developments for PFAS monitoring in air (emission, immission and deposition). Prior to VITO, Jelle has conducted research in the air quality field for 7 years, from an academic (postdoc at University of Antwerp, BE), policy (Flanders Environmental Agency, BE) and technological (R&D at imec, NL) perspective.
Amy Stidworthy is an Associate Director at Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC) with almost 25 years’ experience in the technical development and application of CERC’s ADMS air pollution dispersion models. Amy’s team are responsible for developing and maintaining CERC’s operational air quality forecasting services. She also leads projects related to model evaluation and the development of inversion tools that combine measurements with models to estimate emissions

A Chemical Engineer with industrial experience in the cement manufacturing industries. Joining the Environment Agency in 1997 as a Process Industries and Radioactive Substances inspector, was an ideal opportunity to gain regulatory experience over a wide number of industrial sectors. Subsequent roles have included team leader and management of permitting teams before becoming the national technical lead for the cement, lime and minerals industries as well as the waste incineration sector. Representing the UK at EU BREF meetings in Europe was an ideal platform for establishing the new UK BAT regime and taking on the newly established post of UK BAT Manager.
