Abstract Information :

Reactive mercury (RM), that consists of gaseous oxidized (GOM) and particulate-bound (PBM) mercury (Hg), has not been accurately measured in the past. In fact, it has been demonstrated that ambient RM concentrations are 2- to 13-times higher in many places than that measured with existing commercial instrumentation. RM is readily deposited to ecosystems and more bioavailable than elemental Hg. Thus, measurement methods are needed that accurately measure RM concentrations and chemistry. This workshop will introduce new methods for measuring and calibrating instruments that measure ambient GOM, PBM, and RM. Workshop presenters will describe the methods they are developing and present their findings. Workshop presenters and attendees will discuss results from alternative methods, best practices for method development, and remaining gaps in RM measurement methodology. Developers of new methods will provide virtual tours of their instrumentation and testing facilities where possible. How this information is important for model improvements will also be covered. Measurements are needed to support and advance global, regional, and local mercury biogeochemical models.
