The protection of the environment and health is becoming increasingly important resulting in a global trend of reducing and limiting pollutants emitted from industrial sources.
In many countries and regions there is an increasing legal requirement for industry to monitor, control and provide evidence of pollutants being emitted from their processes. All across the globe, the legally permitted emission limits are being reduced and there is an increased number of pollutants needing to be measured and controlled.
The operators of the affected plants need to find solutions to optimize existing or install new monitoring and control equipment and cleaning processes to ensure all pollutants are kept within their permitted limits.
The manufacturers of continuous measurement systems, analyzers and sensors have to respond to the increased number of pollutants needing to be measured and emission limits being reduced by improving existing, or through development of new measurement systems and technology.
Measurement systems will need to provide more sensitivity for the measurement of lower concentrations and maintain or improve measurement availability, keeping operating costs and maintenance to a minimum.
One pollutant commonly measured continuously and seeing reduced emission limits due to the raised awareness of the impact on public health is Particulate Matter (dust).
The forward scattering detection technique has become established for measurement of small particles of dust at low concentrations in the range of a few milligrams per standard cubic meter.
The measurement of low dust concentrations after wet scrubbers, in water-saturated or supersaturated gases is a particular challenge, due to both the dust particles and water droplets being capable of scattering light.
To measure dust in wet gas streams, first the water droplets in the sample must be evaporated leaving just the remaining particles of dust to be detected by scattered light.
DURAG has delivered several wet dust monitors which uses a scattered light measuring cell since decades. This presentation describes the basic technology and provides information on the operation and use of such a monitor from existing applications.
