Over the 8 to 10 years the US market has been focused on continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS) for particulate matter (PM) as well as many other pollutants. All of the new regulations and emission monitoring requirements has taken our focus away from the basic issues. What also seems to have gotten lost is the fact that if you keep your PM control system, baghouse, ESP, etc., operating efficiently then PM emissions and the emissions of other pollutants will be lower. Emission monitoring is not going away, but shifting the focus to what you can control just makes more sense. Maintaining good particulate control will result in lower emissions, easier compliance and lower costs.
This presentation will be a case study in how we lost our focus. It will go back in time to revisit the basics of good baghouse monitoring and particulate control. Data will be provided to show that compliance is easier with better baghouse control and the costs to associated with maintaining compliance are less. The presentation will also identify cost savings opportunities in baghouse operations as the PM is being lowered. The presentation will not be how to do your emission monitoring, but how to reduce your emissions.
