Alex Hodgson is the Applications Manager at VUV Analytics, Inc. In his 5+ years at VUV, he has been instrumental in research focused on fuels analysis, including ASTM D8267 (jet fuel), D8368 (diesel), and D8369 (VHA), as well as IP630 (EU gasoline). He also leads the charge in the creation of vacuum ultraviolet applications for the flavor and fragrance industries, among a variety of other VUV-related endeavors. Prior to coming to VUV Analytics, Alex was a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where his research focused on tobacco exposure biomarkers. He earned a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.S. in biochemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Andrew has over 15 years’ hands-on experience with ICP-MS and ICP-OES instrumentation. He has mainly worked in the pharmaceutical analysis industry gaining significant experience with developing and validating methods to pharma regulations. Andrew started working for Agilent in January 2018 working as an Atomic Spectroscopy Application Engineer based at the Agilent Centre of Excellence in the UK where he has been involved with many different applications, especially including elemental analysis of oil samples

Anupam has earned his PhD in 2010 from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan working on “Characterization of flavour and bio-active components by diverse analytical tools”. His thesis resulted in 10 peer-reviewed publications and a best overseas thesis award from Indian professional society. Since then he had completed several post-docs in Japan (The University of Tokyo; Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology), China (South China University of Technology), France (Institute of National Research Agricole), Belgium (European Commission; University of Liege in collaboration with Total, France) for about 10 years. Since 2017, he is working at SABIC, Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands as the Lead Scientist within the Analytical Technology team and focused on CHROM-MS. His academic background and further specialization focused on analytical chemistry, development and validation of analytical methods by various chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry including high resolution mass spectrometry. His hands on experience in chromatography includes, but is not limited to: GC×GC-HRTOF-MS coupled to different ion-sources and selective detectors, GC-QTOF and GC-MS/MS, GC-MS-O, multi booth GC-MS-8O, SPME, purge & trap GC-MS, heart-cut GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, Orbitrap, QTrap, ESR etc. He also authored/co-authored over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters.

Benjamin Mattejiet is currently the Director of Marketing and Sales for the EMEA region at Process Insights / LAR Process Analysers in Frankfurt, Germany. Benjamin holds a BA in Business Administration focused on finance and marketing. Since 2008 he has been working at LAR Process Analysers in various positions. In the last 14 years, he has thus gained extensive experience in online water analysis in various industries. In his current role, Benjamin leads an international team that provides solutions for difficult measurement challenges in gas and water analytics.

Dan Wispinski is the Standard Methods Development Manager for VUV Analytics. Dan has been instrumental in the development and publication of laboratory methods using GCVUV technology including ASTM D8071 for gasoline, ASTM D8267 for jet fuel, ASTM D8368 for diesel and ASTM D8369 for Verified Hydrocarbon Analysis. Prior to joining VUV Analytics, Dan managed one of Canada’s top fuel testing research labs at InnoTech Alberta, formerly Alberta Research Council. Dan has over 40 years of experience in refined fuel specifications, biofuels, crude oil, and bitumen. He is chairman of the Canadian General Standards Board Petroleum Test Methods Committee (CGSB) and an active member of ASTM, IASH, CEN and the Energy Institute G6 Panel. Dan was instrumental in the development of high-resolution gas chromatographic detailed hydrocarbon analysis test methods including the Canadian regulatory CGSB 3.0 No. 14.3 method.

Didier THIEBAUT is a Doctor of Pharmacy and Ph D in Analytical Chemistry. He is Director of Research at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in the Department of Analytical, Bioanalytical Sciences and Miniaturization in the Chemistry Biology Innovation Institute of ESPCI Paris, PSL University. His research focuses on Gas, Liquid and Supercritical Fluid Chromatographies, their miniaturised (on-chip), comprehensive and hyphenated versions, and their application to the analysis of organic compounds in very complex matrices (petroleomics, lipidomics, environment…) in partnership with academic groups or companies. He authored or co-authored more than 130 publications, 3 books, 8 book chapters and 4 patents. He is the former president of "Francophone Association of Separation Sciences" (AfSep).

Brian has managed the first company in the field of chemometrics since 1985 applying his expertise in the integration of multivariate data processing for process analyzers and laboratory instruments catering to routine quality analysis. Prior to Infometrix, he held positions as a research scientist, a laboratory manager, an exploration geologist, and managed planning and budget for a major oil company. He has served on the board of directors of several instrument companies and consults for instrument companies, oil companies, and analytical service organizations. Rohrback holds a B.S. in chemistry, a Ph.D. in organic geochemistry, and an MBA. His publications cover topics in diagnostics, informatics, pattern recognition, multivariate analysis, petroleum exploration, refining, and chemical plant optimization. In 2016, he was presented the Excellence in Analytical Technical Innovation Award by the International Society of Automation (ISA), their highest technology award, for work in automating data processing and managing instruments used in quality control.

Vincent obtained his PhD in physical chemistry from ENS Cachan in 2007 for his work on "Molecular engineering and fluorescence for the detection of toxic cations". He has been working since 2009 as a research engineer in IFPEN in the Physics and Analysis Division and was head of IFPEN Gas Chromatography laboratory from 2012 to 2016. His research work mainly focuses on the detailed characterization of complex samples derived from crude oil or coming from the transformation of biomass or plastics. It includes the development of comprehensive bidimensional gas chromatography methods (GCxGC) with different type of modulation systems or detectors (SCD, FID, NCD, MS, VUV, etc.) and the development of dedicated data treatment tools.

Eliane Lazzari holds a PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University Federal of Rio Grande do Sul (2019) carrying out two six-months internship at Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL), Spain and at the University of Liège (ULiege), Belgium. Currently, still in collaboration with ULiege, is holding a postdoctoral position at TOTALenergies. Her main research interests are aimed to the study of recycled plastic/biomass pyrolysis process and characterization of its liquid products (bio-oil). Particularly, on the development of new methods and applications using two-dimensional gas chromatography techniques (GC×GC) coupled to different detectors and in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy field.

Fabien PEDRETTI graduated from a Master degree in analytical chemistry. He started as field service engineer working on electronic noses and electronic tongues on the American market. Then, he moved to a chemistry application engineer position for a company selling laboratory instruments in the water analysis market, before covering sales activities and managing a network of distributors for the same company during several years. In 2020, he started a new role as a project manager for Chromatotec and is in charge of Europe territory.

Since 1999 working for Shimadzu Europa GmbH. First as Product Specialist responsible for application and technical support. Since 2013 Product Manager responsible for business development of Shimadzu Gas Chromatography in Europe.

Before:
Worked at the Research Center in Julich on development of automated techniques for trace gas measurements in atmosphere and at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), on kinetics of degradation processes for atmospheric pollutants. PhD thesis in Atmospheric Science at Research Center in Jülich (Germany), research on degradation of atmospheric pollutants within the Tropospheric Ozone Research (TOR), a EUROTRAC subproject.

Hans Buytaert is a chemical engineer with 30 years of industry experience in Near infrared spectroscopy in a variety of industries varying from petrochemicals, oil and gas, food and feed industries. Hans has provided training on these analysers and also installed, calibrated and troubleshooted both lab and process Near infrared analyser. Hans currently works for Process Insights EMEA as a subject matter expert for Guided Wave’s UV-VIS & NIR process analysers and sample interfaces like process probes and flow cell.

Jaakko Lehtinen (born in 1985) works as a Business Development Manager for Gasera Ltd, a Finnish high-tech company specializing in ultimate performance gas analyzers. In his current position he is responsible for developing new applications and business for GASERA ONE gas analyzer platform as well as having sales responsibility mainly in Asia&Pacific region.

Jaakko received his PhD in physics in 2014 at University of Turku, Finland, where he also completed his undergraduate studies. The research interests included applying novel cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy methods developed in the Department of Physics in various gas- and solid-phase measurement scenarios.

Jaakko has spent the last 10+ years working in the field of optical spectroscopy. In this industry, Jaakko has worked for Gasera Ltd as well as for Spectral Engines Oy, a Finnish innovator of material sensing technologies known for their miniaturized MEMS-based NIR spectrometers, gaining experience from both engineering and commercial roles. Prior to that Jaakko worked as a research scientist in Laboratory of Optics and Spectroscopy in Department of Physics, University of Turku in various European Union funded research projects.

Josephine Lübeck is a PostDoc researcher in the laboratory of Prof Jan H. Christensen at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. During her PhD research in the same group, she developed and optimised methods on SFC-MS and two-dimensional GC to analyse organic molecules in environmental samples and unconventional oils (e.g. coal tar and pyrolysis oils) in a non-targeted approach. From 2019 to 2022, she managed a research project in collaboration with the German Environment Agency (UBA) to develop analytical protocols for the analysis of petroleum- and coal tar-based (PetCo) products with GC, GC×GC and SFC-MS, with a focus on oxygen- and nitrogen-containing species. From May 2022, she will be working on developing advanced chemical analyses (incl. SFC-MS, LC/SFC-ICP-MS) of feeds and hydrotreated products of pyrolysis oils as part of the HyProFuel research project. Her areas of expertise include the development of chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods in SFC, LC, GC×GC and MS, as well as the extraction and analysis of environmental and pyrolysis oil samples. Josephine has published her work in several peer-reviewed journals and popular science magazines, and has participated in several conferences to bring attention to SFC and non-targeted analysis of complex matrices.

I am a PhD student in the Institute of Chemistry, Chair of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Rostock. My research work focuses on the development and characterisation of recycling strategies for the reuse of end-of-life materials from glass fibre reinforced/ carbon fibre reinforced composites. For this purpose, different approaches (e.g. pyrolysis, solvolysis) to separate the fibres from the resin matrix are applied. Moreover, we are mimicking the pyrolysis process via thermal analysis coupled to mass spectrometry (TOF-MS and FT-MS) in a small scale set-up. Finally, pyrolysis products from pilot plants are addressed.

Dr. Maximilian Jennerwein studied Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich (Campus Weihenstephan, Freising). After finishing his studies and absolving a traineeship in Food Law, he started with his Ph.D. studies in Analytical Chemistry in a cooperation project of the “Joint Mass Spectrometry Centre” (JMSC; a cooperation between the Chair of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Rostock and the Cooperation Group “Comprehensive Molecular Analytics” at the Helmholtz Centre Munich) and the company ASG – Analytik-Service AG, an independent test laboratory in the field of Fuels and petrochemical Products. After finishing his Ph.D. studies, he continued working at ASG in the Department of Research & Development with the focus on adapting established analytical methods and developing new methods for the increasingly fast changing fuels market, which include more and more renewable fuels.

Scott Received his BS in Chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2009 and his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 2013. He spent 8 years working for ExxonMobil as a GC chemist in a refinery quality control lab and as a GC and GCxGC research chemist in their research organization. Scott joined Agilent technologies in 2021 as a GC Applications Chemist in the Life Sciences and Applied Markets group in Wilmington, Delaware. His current work is focused on GC applications supporting the renewable fuels transition and the emerging GCxGC applications landscape.

Carlo Bruno, a chemist with a passion for analytical instruments. After long time spent in the academic research at the University of Bologna, he joined Pollution Analytical Company as a product specialist and sale support. After 10 years in Pollution company, he is now responsible for the worldwide business development.

Charlotte Mase is currently conducting a PhD in analytical chemistry at COBRA laboratory in collaboration with TotalEnergies. She works on the molecular characterization of pyrolysis oils (plastic or biomass) and new sources of energies by ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Pawel Kluczynski obtained his Master degree in 1997 in Physics and his Ph.D. degree in 2002 in a field of laser spectroscopy. He started his research with tunable laser spectroscopy methods in 1997 developing algorithms for data processing. He is an author of more than 25 scientific papers and inventor of 14 granted patents in the field of tunable laser gas analyzers. In 2001-2010 he has been working with design of tunable laser gas analyzers at Siemens. He co-founded Airoptic in 2010. He has been the CEO of the company since 2010

Jean-François (Jef) Focant is Full Professor at the Chemistry Department at ULiege in Belgium. Expert in multidimensional GC coupled to MS, his team develops and validate analytical methods for the measurement of (semi)volatile molecules present in complex matrices. His Organic and Biological Analytical Chemistry Laboratory is known for its focus on solving real-life analytical challenges to serve the general society. The diversity of applications is very large and covers fields such as forensics, food control, archeology, and much more. Major recent activities include metabolomics (volatolomics, breathomics), especially oriented to biomarker discovery in medical applications, and petroleomics to contribute to better characterize the chemical complexity of the growing variety of (bio)feedstocks and products that are appearing next to classical geological fluids. The team also specializes in specific chemometric solutions for feature selections over large data sets from multi-class studies (forensics, petroleomics, …)

Carlos Gil is a professional with over 20-year experience in analytical chemistry with a focus on sample preparation and sample introduction techniques mainly for GC–MS. He is graduated engineer in Applied Chemistry and is currently Business Development Manager for Schauenburg Analytics (the parent company of Markes International and SepSolve Analytical), supporting customers and partners in finding the best possible analytical solutions, following new analytical trends, and initiating collaborations.

Matthias Pursch is an R&D Fellow in Core R&D Analytical Science at Dow, based in Wiesbaden, Germany. His research interests include Chromatography and Spectroscopy, with Liquid Phase Separations and related techniques being a particular focus area. In recent years, Matthias and his colleagues have been developing & applying 2D-LC techniques for small molecule determination in complex/polymeric matrices, characterization of challenging industrial process streams, and chemical structure analysis of surfactants as well as polymers / copolymers. Matthias is the author/co-author of more than 55 publications and has given about 50 external presentations. He is a member of the extended board in the Separation Science sub-division with the German Chemists Society (GDCh).

Danny van Oevelen graduated as an analytical chemist (HLO, Dr. Struijken Instituut, Etten-Leur, the Netherlands) and works since 2001 with Agilent Technologies. The first 14 years she worked as an account manager in the Netherlands covering the Agilent instruments and software. Since 2015 she is working as a Product Specialist for the portfolio of liquid based separations instruments ((U)HPLC, 2D-LC, GPC, SFC, CE, Purification and Dissolution) supporting the Agilent sales team in the Benelux.

Studied food chemistry at the university of Bonn, Germany. During his Master Thesis in 2017, he was first exposed to the Flow-Field Thermal Gradient GC in Dr. Boeker’s working group at the University. Mr. Faust conducted a fundamental research project for Multidimensional Gas-chromatography including the FF-TG-GC as a second dimension, which was funded by the federal German Research Agency (DFG).

In 2018/19 Mr. Faust was involved in the further development of the HyperChrom GC, which is a high-performance gas chromatograph and combines high resolution with unprecedented analysis speed. Since 2020 he is employed as scientist and technical developer at HyperChrom, where he continuously develops and improves the novel HyperChrom GC, with a particular focus on refining the GC into a robust and user-friendly device.

Tom Gallant is the Sales Manager for ECH Scientific (Global Sales Division of ECH Elektrochemie Halle) and a proven technical sales expert in the field of Karl Fischer Titration, Hydrogen Sulphide Analysis and Potentiometric Titration applications. Tom is a frequent publisher for Petro Industry News having written articles on behalf of ECH detailing the new technologies within the titration field and conducted eLearning sessions on the latest trends and developments within ASTM D6304, which is a speciality of ECH.

Jim McCurry is a senior applications chemist specializing in analytical chemistry measurements for the chemical/energy, environmental, food, and forensics industries. His current work is in multidimensional GC, trace analysis in complex matrices, and fast GC, and GC/MS. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). Jim holds a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Scranton and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Lehigh University.

Satbir Nayar has over 30 years of both domestic and international technical commercial experience in analytical instrumentation, information technology/software as a service, high temperature advanced materials, and automated machinery. Of those 30 years, he has worked over a decade with XOS where he has taken on various roles including product management and petroleum sales management in the Americas – which has provided him with the opportunity to leverage his experience to better understand customer needs. Satbir has been an active member with ASTM for over 10 years and COQA for six years.
