Abstract Title: ESTIMATING MERCURY EMISSIONS FROM COAL UNITS TO INFORM COST-EFFECTIVE CONTROL STRATEGIES
Presenter Name: Dr Lesley Sloss
Co-Presenters/Co-authors: Wojciech Jozewicz
Paul Baruya
Company/Organisation: International Centre for Sustainable Carbon
Country: United Kingdom

Abstract Information :

Under Article 8 of the Minamata Convention, ratified countries must prepare a mercury emission inventory for their entire coal utility fleet. They must then determine how to reduce mercury emissions from both new plants and their existing fleet and must build these control strategies into their National Action Plan.

This workshop will demonstrate, using real data, how to prepare both a top down and a bottom up estimates for mercury emissions for a national coal fleet. It will show how to use plant specific information to determine which plants are more suitable for cost-effective mercury reduction technologies. The workshop will conclude with a demonstration of how to estimate what mercury controls may be most appropriate at each plant, using an interactive modelling programme, the iPOG.
