Abstract Information :
The majority of young researchers entering the science community use Microsoft Excel for data management, visualization and statistical analysis. This can present young scientists with a steep learning curve as many academic researchers rely upon the R-coding language while the non-academic data science community uses Python. This skillset divide limits the kinds of tools available to scientists using big data for research purposes. This workshop aims to help the ICMGP community become more comfortable using R and Python together in the same workflow. See a hands-on coding demonstration using real biogeochemical data and gain experience using two popular open-source programming software languages, R and Python, together in the same coding environment, RStudio. This workshop will focus on giving researchers tools to start doing data management, visualization, and analysis, using short modules on
1) scraping datasets from the web using an API (either language),
2) importing and cleaning datasets (R),
3) an exploratory data analysis (Python), and
4) creating plots and maps (either language). A series of coding activities will be presented in R and Python to give learners a better sense of the unique syntax and characteristics of each language.
