Abstract Title: From Hydrocarbons to Hydrogen: What changes when it comes to gas and flame detection?
Presenter Name: Ms Megan Hine
Company/Organisation: Draeger Safety UK
Country: United Kingdom

Abstract Information :

For many years, we've effectively managed and reduced the hazards associated with releases of hydrocarbon gases and vapours; their molecular behaviour is thoroughly understood. However, hydrogen introduces a new challenge. Did you know that the most commonly used flammable gas detectors are blind to hydrogen? Hydrogen's properties significantly differ from those of hydrocarbons, altering and sometimes restricting detection capabilities. Its characteristics, like having an invisible flame, are known, but how do these impact the design of fire and gas detection systems? Additionally, the shift towards sustainable energy involves a transition that might include mixing hydrogen with hydrocarbons to slightly improve CO2 emission levels. This raises questions about the adequacy of existing detection systems and whether any modifications are necessary.
