Professor Lucyna Falkowska  -  In Memory

Lucyna Falkowska, a Professor at the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography of the University of Gdansk in Poland, passed away on April 7, 2021. She lost to COVID-19 after a short battle.

FalkowskaProf. Falkowska has been a leader in studying fate, behavior and effects of mercury in the environment in Poland. Her wide research interests included oceanography, marine and atmospheric chemistry, marine ecology, trace metal in biota, and maternal transfer of xenobiotics. Internationally, Lucyna’s research made key contributions to the understanding of the risk of mercury contamination in the Baltic Sea ecosystems. In this way, her research contributed to the development and implementation of the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Lucyna was a wonderful student mentor, and her graduate students’ growth and success were of extreme importance to her. She worked hard to teach them and help them develop into outstanding scientists.  Lucyna was also very engaged in promotion of science through organization of national and international conferences on mercury exposure and effects in the environment, including the most prestigious International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP), organized in Krakow, Poland in 2019. These activities have earned Lucyna many colleagues and friends in the mercury research community.

Prof. Falkowska was much loved and is sorely missed by her family and relatives, and her many students, friends, and colleagues around the world.
