Meeting the rapidly changing yardsticks of environmental guidelines for coal-fired thermal power plants through technological choices like limestone based wet flue gas desulphurization (FGD) and Sodium bicarbonate based dry sorbent injection (DSI) systems, combustion modification retrofits for NOx control are illustrated in the paper. Operation experiences and challenges related to DSI and wet FGD systems, impact of combustion modification on key operation parameters like Boiler outlet steam temperatures and attemperation flows under different operating conditions are discussed. The paper also focuses on post combustion modification NOx control, Boiler excess air optimization, low load combustion adjustment and stabilization issues and mitigation measures.
