PEFTEC - Abstract

Abstract Title: Selective Discrimination - are you transferring everything you want to your GC column?
Abstract Type: Oral
Session Choice: On-Line Chromatography and Spectroscopy
Presenter Name: Dr Diane Turner

Abstract Information :

Poorly optimised sample introduction methods in gas chromatography can be the cause of many problems - from activity to mass discrimination to dirt. On examining the components of a GC or GC-MS further, it becomes clear that each component has one particular job to do and therefore there are not so many parameters to optimise or different problems that can occur, but a GC inlet has three different jobs involving many different parameters. However, this also means that the GC inlet has a lot of power, power that can be used positively for the good of the remaining instrument components and the whole method. Along with discussing sample introduction techniques and problems, this presentation will be looking at the inlet parameters from a standard split/splitless to a more advanced programmable temperature vaporiser to see how they can be used to improve the capabilities of the analysis method, especially to the extent of using discrimination selectively and positively.
