Many of the modern energy sources and products used around the world rely on the efficient and cost-effective refinery of crude oil. Most crude oil contains salts, which are also known as inorganic chlorides. The inadequate removal of these inorganic chlorides from crude oil leads to various issues in subsequent steps of the oil refining process, such as during distillation and transportation. An excessive amount of salt in crude oil gives rise to the fouling of heat exchangers and pipes. This in turn causes operational losses in pressure and heat transfer, along with the increased expenses and downtime associated with cleaning and repair. In addition, a high salt level in crude oil results in elevated corrosion rates in refining units and deterioration of catalysts used within these units. Therefore, the measurement of salt content within crude oil is critical for enabling the refinery process to be as cost-effective as possible. Inorganic salts must be removed from crude oil to optimize efficiency of the oil refining process, increase the longevity of refinery equipment, and decrease the need for maintenance or repair. After reducing excess salt impurities found in crude oil, the production of refined oil can be maximized. To ensure that crude oil does not cause undesirable complications during the refinery process, instrumentation must be used to measure salt contents in crude oil. The Koehler K23060 Salt in Crude Oil Analyzer rapidly and effectively determines precise salt concentrations in crude oil samples in accordance with the ASTM D3230 method. Implementing this device within the crude oil refining process will uphold the quality of refined oil and refinery equipment. This poster discusses the significance of reduced salt content within crude oil for optimized refinement and how this can be accurately measured.
