Abstract Information :

Hydrogen fuel cells offer great potential for clean, carbon-neutral transportation. However, the risk of contaminants in hydrogen available to the consumer creates challenges. Methods such as ISO 146872 specify the analysis of total sulphur compounds to a limit of detection of less than 4 nmolmol. Analysis of hydrogen fuel impurities is often carried out by a number of analytical techniques to characterize the sample. In order to improve efficiency and reduce detection limits, sampling and analysis using, thermal desorption - gas chromatography mass spectrometry TD-GCMS is employed perform the simultaneous analysis of many components. Various sampling techniques with TD-GCMS, allow low concentrations from hydrogen fuel samples to be detected, whilst facilitating calibration of the system using commercially available gas standards. Systems are also capable of analysing other volatile organic compounds VOCs in the C2 to n-C14 range, including formaldehyde, in a single analysis, simplifying the analytical procedures involved. Work will be presented that shows reproducible analysis of VOC and sulphur containing compounds with detection limits in the range of sub ppb to single digit ppt parts per trillion.
