Abstract Information :

Organochlorides are naturally present in crude oils and can be formed in refining processes due to the addition of chlorinated reactants to improve processes efficiency. They are then responsible for poisoning effects on hydrotreatment catalysts as well as corrosion issues. Hence, investigating the molecular composition of organic chlorides is of major interest to improve the chlorine management in refining processes. Analytical methods for organochlorides speciation in oil products have been extensively reviewed 1, GC-ECD and GCMS being the preferred techniques 2. However some studies have recently been carried out in the field of Inductively Coupled Plasma tandem mass spectrometry ICP-MSMS to develop total or speciation methods for sulfur 3,4,5a, metals 4 or chloride species 5b. Thanks to the collision reaction cell CRC and the two quadrupoles in series, interferences between masses are limited and high selectivities and sensitivities can be achieved.rnrnIn our study, we have investigated the hyphenation of gas chromatography with an Agilent ICP-MSMS 8800 instrument for the analysis of organochlorides. H2 was used as reactant gas in the CRC cell and the gas flows feeding the plasma carrier gas and option gas containing oxygen were carefully optimized to limit the interferences due to hydrocarbons. The response towards organochlorides proved to be linear and equimolar against elemental chlorine on a large dynamic range with limits of detection in the range of 30-50 gClL per peak. This method was successfully applied to the analysis of light petroleum samples, giving consistent results with other elemental techniques such as microcoulometry and X-ray fluorescence. Analysis of heavier petroleum cuts or biomass derived volatile products is also possible by changing the GC separating conditions column, oven program, etc. with similar performances, attesting the strength of this technique for the untargeted analysis of organochlorides in volatile samples.rnrn1Li X. et al.
