Abstract Information :

Accurate and reliable BTEX testing Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes is essential for the determination of the exposure level and contamination in the environment. High levels of BTEX exposure can affect human health and the environment, which has resulted in a European Directive and EPA guidelines to set allowable limits.rnQuick detection of these harmful compounds, and consequent counteraction, is a great help in improving the quality of the environment and reducing health risks for people. Innovative analytical instruments are needed to supply real-time data that are reliable, precise, and readily available on Cloud. At the moment, there are several technologies and sensors available for the detection of BTEX: each of them has advantages and disadvantages. PID photoionization detection is very sensitive to Benzene but not selective, therefore Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes cannot be distinguished PID lamp usually responds to molecules with carbon double bonds and aromatics. MOX sensors metal oxide, similarly are not specific to individual organic compounds, and suffer from the lack of specificity, due to a range of potential interferences either from other gases and in addition the temperature and humidity can affect the results. Electrochemical detectors are another range of detectors that are not specific, like MOX and PID and can also suffer from a range of interferences. rnGas chromatography, because of the intrinsic capability to separate every single component, is the best solution to selectively quantify BTEX. This approach allows for detection and quantification of BTEX compounds in a sub-ppb concentration, however, common gas chromatographs are bulky, need a controlled environment to properly function, pressurized gas cylinders, skilled technicians, so they are not suitable for modern applications such as fenceline monitoring or smart city projects. Pollution Analytical Equipment has developed in recent years a new type of analyser, which will improve the environmental control of industries and governments. PyxisGC is an innovative BTEX monitoring station with no carrier gas, low power consumption, fully automated measurement, 247 real-time data acquisition, and connectivity to the Cloud. A truly unique portable GC that can be placed outside directly on-site and continuously send information about the quality of air and BTEX concentration, reducing the risk of exposure to workers, the public, and the environment. A device that can be used to create a network and put under control vast areas around industrial facilities, also in combination with other sensors, like electronic noses or total VOCs, in order to give a reliable and precise picture of the pollutants in ambient air. Whatever there is or not legal requirements in force, businesses must protect their staff appropriately against aromatics exposure.
