Abstract Information :

Petrochemical materials are complex and require a range of analytical tools to fully understand composition. Increasingly the industry is turning to easy to use, small, high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) as part of the toolbox. The application of different ionisation techniques such as atmospheric pressure ionisation (ESI, APPI), ambient ionisation (DESI, DART) and field ionisation (FI, LIFDI) using Thermo Orbitrap® and Joel AccuTOF® instruments are presented along with separation tools such as field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) and more traditional techniques like GCxGC, GCMS, and LC. In each case the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches will be discussed using upstream and downstream examples from across BP. HRMS continues to be a vibrant area of technology development which can generate incredible amounts of information from complex materials. Applied to industrial petrochemical challenges, these advances can provide new insights, increase throughput, drive innovation, reduce speed to decision and save costs.
