Viscosity is a measurement of a fluids internal friction, or put more simply how little or how much a fluid flows. This concept, while seemingly simple, is a very complex and important idea to consider in many fields, especially when making petroleum products. The viscosity of a fluid greatly affects its physical properties and so determining the viscosity of a fluid would help in determining its physical properties. This is especially important when it comes to petroleum products as they are used in many different industries and find prevalent usage in a wide range of applications in modern society. Determining the viscosity of a fluid allows manufacturers to determine the usefulness of a fluid for certain applications and whether the addition of appropriate additives is necessary. The viscosity of petroleum products is especially important for determining the proper handling, storage, and operation of specific formulations. ASTM D445 details the procedure for the kinematic viscosity determination of transparent and opaque liquid petroleum. This poster will discuss how the viscosity of fluids is determined, why it is important, and how it affects petroleum products.
