Abstract Information :

Over the last few years problems have arisen with the failure of ship engines burning bunker fuel. The source of these problems is thought to be fuel contamination by chemical species. The international standard for bunker is ISO 8217. However, this standard does not list the individual deleterious chemical species or any specific analytical method to measure suspect contaminants. ASTM has developed method D7845 to measure 30 chemical compounds in bunker using two-dimensional gas chromatographymass spectrometry 2D GCMS. While this method is widely used, some laboratories have struggled to meet performance, especially for some of the polar compounds. In this paper we used the general 2D GCMS approach outlined in D7845, but employed techniques to enhance chromatographic resolution and speed, reduce matrix interference, and improve sample preparation and calibration.
