Abstract Title: Approach to Expand the Availability of Reference Gases to Support Regulatory Emissions Monitoring
Presenter Name: Mr Jeff Ryan
Company/Organisation: US Environmental Protection Agency
Country: United States

Abstract Information :

In the US, calibration gases (i.e., Protocol Gases) directly traceable to reference gases established by National Metrological Institutes (NMIs) such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are integral to EPA’s regulatory compliance programs. To expand regulatory monitoring to pollutants of emerging interest, new reference gases are needed and must be developed by the NMIs. This takes time and resources which may not be available. This presentation will discuss an alternative approach EPA is currently developing where the specialty gas providers are authorized to develop and utilize functionally equivalent reference gases - Gas Manufacturer Primary Standards (GMPS) - to prepare the necessary calibration gases – Gas Manufacturer Alternative Certified Standards (GMACS) until such time as NMI reference gases are available.
