This paper combines a review of the history of WITS (Water Industry Telemetry Standards) and the WITS-DNP3 Protocol together with possible directions that WITS will be looking to follow in the future. In the review of the history it pulls out the reasons users originally pulled together to develop the protocol, the state of play with deployment in the UK, the good and bad aspects of the protocol and the lessons we have learned in doing that. Bearing in mind these lessons and the expected impact of IoT technologies on telemetry within the water industry, the paper then goes on to discuss possible future directions that WITS may take.
