Paper Information :
Aerobic granulation is a novel wastewater treatment process that has proved being more efficient than current conventional methods, like the activated sludge process. Mathematical modeling is essential for full scale application and automation of the process. A new model for biological processes was developed similar to the activated sludge model (ASM) platform, combining two separate models of heterotrophic and autotrophic biomass activity to account for the organics and nutrients removal. The model was calibrated and verified using two batch experiments with high strength synthetic wastewater and different COD/N ratios of 100:4 and 200:3 respectively. COD removal was accurately simulated with R2 of 95.3% and 86%, while TKN removal was simulated with R2 of 84.1% and 89%.
