Shimelis, Bellefonte/USrnrnDr. Frank Michel, Merck/Sigma-Aldrich, Eschenstr. 5, 82024 TaufkirchenrnrnrnPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are on the monitoring list of drinking water contaminants worldwide due to their potential adverse effects for human health. [1,2] Two preferred sample preparation methods involving solid phase extraction (SPE) are used for the determination of select PFAS in drinking water in the low ppt (ng/mL) range. One utilizes a weak anion exchange (WAX) cartridge, and the second method uses a polymeric divinylbenzene cartridge, both utilizing LC-MS/MS detection for quantification. [3,4]rnrnIn this study, a new developed WAX SPE cartridge and a polymeric divinylbenzene cartridge were evaluated to extract short-chain PFAS analytes from drinking water according to EPA Methods 533 and 537.1 respectively. It was demonstrated that both cartridges had extremely low levels of PFAS background which is essential to prevent contamination of the sample during the extraction procedure. Modifications to the vacuum manifold were incorporated to accommodate the need for extremely low PFAS background.rnrnReplicate extractions of each PFAS analyte using SPE were found to be well within the recovery guidelines. This indicates that both the new WAX and the polymeric SPE cartridges are suitable for usage in the EPA methods in terms required performance.rnrnrnLiterature:rnrn[1] Directive (EU) 2020/2184 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16 December 2020 on the quality of water intended for human consumption.
