Abstract Information :

The chemical composition of a feedstock influences its performance in the cracking process. We present a fast yet powerful method of assessing feedstock chemical composition including alkane branching and aromatic to aliphatic ratio as well as impurities such as olefins and oxygenate related features. The method is based on Attenuated total reflectance –FTIR where sample preparation is as simple as placing a drop of feedstock onto the sampling interface for measurement. FTIR, which is based on interaction of infrared light with the functional groups of the sample, provides a wealth of information on CH3/CH2 ratio, presence of C=O and C=C existing in both aromatic ring structures and olefins. A chemometric approach results in a quick quantitative method to classify different feedstocks and provides rich information within minutes.
