Abstract Information :

Gas chromatography is a proven technology for compositional analysis of hydrocarbon streams. For fast gas analysis, isothermal micro gas chromatography can be applied. A popular application for natural gas and refinery gas includes detailed analysis of C1 to C5 hydrocarbons in about 2 minutes. Full identification of the C6+ compounds on a single channel Micro GC can take up to 7 minutes. All the compounds in the sample need to elute from the column to include in peak area summation and preventing them for disturbing flowing analysis.

This paper describes the application of backflush to detector on a Micro GC. In this setup C6+ compounds are analyzed as a single chromatographic peak. This setup is commonly used in benchtop GC, however novel to Micro GC. It results in even faster run-to-run times, as there is no need to wait for high boiling hydrocarbons to elute from the system. A second advantage is that more accurate results are obtained. Late eluting compounds with concentrations below detection limit will now be included in the composite C6+ peak. This is particularly important for calculation of the physical properties of the gas sample, such as calorific value, Wobbe-index and density. The results from the backflush to detector setup are in compliance with international reference standards (ISO, ASTM and GPA).
