Abstract Information :

Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry provides the best analytical tools, combining selectivity, sensitivity, reliability, and information capacity for targeted or non-targeted methods of environmental analysis. GC-MS identification of knowns (by matching against commercially available and user created spectral libraries) and structural elucidation of unknowns becomes considerably more reliable if complemented by accurate mass measurements while using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS). However, when analyzing real-world samples containing a very high number of compounds of interest in a very wide range of concentrations present in a complex matrix, a significant increase of chromatographic peak capacity is required, which can be provided only by using multidimensional GC. Therefore, GCxGC coupled to a high-resolution mass spectrometer is becoming a powerful tool for comprehensive analysis of complex samples. A novel GCxGC-HRMS with enhanced sensitivity via Encoded Frequent Pushing and an ion flight path of 20m for a mass range of 1-1500amu of was used for analyzing Arctic snow samples. The snow samples were collected by the Arctic Floating University in ten different locations in the Arctic during a 20-day expedition. More than 300 related analytes were detected in the samples while using GCxGC-HRMS, while only 70 analytes were detected using GC-HRMS. The examples of improved identification reliability using GCxGC-HRMS are presented.
