Short description about presentation:

In many industries worldwide and specifically in India under the 17 Industries Programme, processes that utilise wet scrubbing dust abatement systems or wet flue gas desulphurisation plant such as Steel manufacturing, Chemical production, Fertiliser manufacturing and Coal Fired Power Stations are being required by law to continuously monitor particulate emissions in stacks which present high levels of liquid droplets.

The demanding conditions found in these types of stacks has led to the development of a number of differing techniques to measure dust in the presence of liquid droplets.

This presentation will provide an overview of factors which should be considered when utalising PM CEMS for wet applications. We will consider different methodologies and operating techniques, accuracy, installation considerations and ongoing maintenance requirements.

The monitoring of saturated stacks is much more challenging than normal dry applications therefore process data and installation considerations, appropriate type approvals (MCERTS, UBA, and US EPA) and their impact on configuration / calibration will be reviewed. In addition, the most appropriate installation points together with potential maintenance considerations will be discussed. Measurement choices including fixed rate sampling, over sampling and iso-kinetic measurement will be summarised.

Extractive technology types such as Beta attenuation, dilution and heated extractive methodologies together with the limitations of traditional in-situ measurement technologies such as Opacity, Laser Scatter and Probe-electrification instruments in these duties will also be discussed.

Real world examples will be highlighted to provide an unbiased overview of what should be considered by end users and integrators when selecting instrumentation for this type of duty.
