Abstract Information :

Compliance Mode: In 2005, growth journey at Tata Steel (TSL) started with expansion of crude steel production capacity from 4 MTPA to 5 MTPA. As per the Environment Clearance conditions issued by Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India ,it stated to install 4 online ambient air quality monitoring system in the downward direction with maximum GLC. Subsequently in 2007, Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India accorded expansion for Jamshedpur Steel plant crude steel production capacity from 5 MTPA to 6.8 MTPA. As per the Environment Clearance conditions it stated online stack emission monitoring system for all new facilities like Sinter Plant & Power House 6 and existing major stacks. This has initiated Tata Steel's journey of Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) in the year 2008 with planning process in place. As it was a very new area to be worked upon, learning from European operations post-acquisition in 2007 came readily handy. However, implementing the same was not so convenient. Technology selection, vendor assessment, service and product quality assurance, retrofitting in existing units were key issues to be dealt, before finalising scope of procurement order.

Beyond Compliance: In due course, TSL expanded to 11MTPA and CEMS installations in stacks has increased from major process stacks to non-process stacks. Learning on CEMS has increased manifold. Opacity Technology moved from fixed type calibrated system to auto correction system.
