Abstract Information :

When odor issues occur at an industrial site, rapid diagnosis must be done to define the best source treatment strategy. Manual sampling techniques used for spot measurement can lead to problems during sampling and transport to the laboratory for analysis. Therefore, there is a need for online analyzers to monitor odor constituents. The vigi e-nose autoGC analyzer presented in past editions provides reliable measurements based on speciation and quantification of up to 14 sulfur compounds (H2S, mercaptans, Sulfides, SO2), total VOCs and odor intensity monitoring. When trained with dynamic olfactometry it can also provide odor concentration equivalence with certified value as system integrate certified calibration tube. Associated with a local meteorological weather station installed on-site, it can appreciate impact of potential emissive sources. With the vigiODOR software, deployed in composting sites, WWTP or methanization centers, user access on real-time information of the chemical and olfactive global fingerprint. It enables to model the dispersion of odors around industrial sites. It offers automatic notification for odor exceedance levels on pre-defined sensible points and online registration of complaints. Thanks to forecasting mode and tests using sensory panel perception around the site, industrials can anticipate nuisance and limit their impact on the neighborhood. To complete the odor monitoring range, an all-in-one solution for the online monitoring of methane (CH4) and Non-Methane Total Hydrocarbons (THC) was deployed in odor and chemical control units in Belgium and UK. It allowed accurate and fastest results to inform user and provider when media support (charcoal or bio filters) is saturated and needs to be replaced. The fully automatic, wall-mounted instrument to be presented consists in an automated Gas Chromatograph (GC) with Flame Ionization Detection (FID): chromaTHC. It provides the ability to quantify methane (CH4) and non-methanic total hydrocarbons (nmTHC), with THC by sum, concentrations from ppb to ppm within only 2 minutes and without matrix effects. The standalone system can integrate a multiplexer sampling line to collect gas from 2 channeled or surface sources in standard to define odor control unit performance ratio. Recently, a 4G router for Internet connection is integrated into the wall-mounted cabinets with the analyzers. Designed for the real-time visualization of data, a website reports real-time results and history for each compound analyzed in table and graph formats refreshed every minute. The additional automatic alarm by SMS and email function allows informing users in case of malfunction, such as interrupted analyzes or zero measurements of total VOC. The system allows defining different access rights according to the responsibilities and having a pre-alarm threshold and an alarm threshold for each compound in case the measurement exceeds the limits. In addition to the VOCs surveillance for the user with optimal performance, it informs charcoal filter provider when media must be changed. The system includes a built-in computer and zero air and hydrogen generators. The measurement system performance evaluation is completed using the internal calibration with a permeation tube to provide automatic data validation. This fully automatic user-friendly system does not require specialized people to operate. The high quality of the information is assured without the need for verification by an expert and without needs of gas cylinders. In addition, such solution can be deployed in hazardous areas when requested.
